ABSTRACT

Purpose@#This study evaluated the distance from the posterior root apices to the maxillary sinus floor (MSF) and the frequency of roots touching or protruding through the MSF using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). @*Materials and Methods@#This study included 100 subjects divided into different vertical and anteroposterior skeletal growth patterns. On CBCT images, the distance from the posterior root apices to MSF was measured and the frequency of roots touching or protruding through the MSF was evaluated using NNT software (version 5.3.0.0; ImageWorks, Elmsford, NY, USA). @*Results@#No statistically significant differences were found in the distance from the posterior root apices to the MSF among vertical skeletal groups (P>0.05). The palatal roots of the first molar and the palatal, mesio-buccal and disto-buccal roots of the second molars had significantly less distance from MSF in skeletal class II than in class III (P<0.05). The high-angle group had the highest frequencies of roots touching or protruding into the maxillary sinus (49.8%); the lowest proportion of these roots was found in skeletal class III (28.3%) and the highest proportion in class II (50.3%). Males had shorter distances from the posterior root apices to the MSF and higher frequencies of roots protruding through or touching the MSF than females. @*Conclusion@#Anteroposterior skeletal growth patterns and sex affected the distances from the maxillary posterior roots to the MSF. The frequency of roots protruding into or touching the sinus was affected by both vertical and anteroposterior skeletal groups and sex. These findings have implications for dental practice.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To evaluate the characteristics of left ventricular structure, function, myocardial mechanics, hemodynamics and synchrony in different phenotypes of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) using state-of-the-art echocardiography.@*Methods@#A consecutive series of 85 adult HCM patients who were admitted to the Xi Jing HCM center from January 2016 to November 2017 were collected. According to the peak left ventricular outflow tract pressure gradient in exercise stress echocardiography, the patients were divided into three groups: patients with non-obstructive HCM (n=28), those with labile-obstructive HCM (n=27), and those with obstructive HCM (n=30). In addition, 16 normal family members of HCM patients were included as control group. Two-dimensional speckle tracking imaging, tissue Doppler imaging and exercise stress echocardiography were used to evaluate the left ventricular function in resting and exercise states.@*Results@#①As compared with the control group, left ventricular end-diastolic diameter decreased and left ventricular ejection fraction increased in all three HCM groups(all P<0.05). Left ventricular maximum wall thickness and left ventricular mass index were the highest in obstructive HCM, followed by labile-obstructive and non-obstructive HCM, and the lowest in the control group (all P<0.05). ②At rest, the left ventricular global longitudinal, circumferential and radial strain (GLS, GCS and GRS), as well as the twist of obstructive HCM were significantly lower than the other three groups (all P<0.05). As compared with the control group, the GLS and twist decreased in the labile-obstructive and non-obstructive HCM(all P<0.05), but there were no significant changes of GCS and GRS (all P>0.05). The obstructive HCM had the lowest mitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE) and s′, and the longest systolic peaking time standard deviation(Ts-SD) and early diastolic peaking time standard deviation(Te-SD) (all P<0.05). The left ventricular diastolic function of obstructive HCM (e′, the E/e′ ratio and the left atrial volume index) was the worst, labile-obstruction and non-obstructive HCM were better, and the control group was the best (all P<0.001). ③During exercise, the GLS, GCS, GRS, twist of the left ventricle and the MAPSE were the lowest in the obstructive HCM, which increased in the labile-obstructive and non-obstructive HCM, and were best in the control group. The Ts-SD and Te-SD were the shortest in the control group, were prolonged in non-obstructive and labile-obstruction HCM, and were longest in obstructive HCM (all P<0.05). Additionally, the exercise time of the control group was the longest, followed by non-obstructive and labile-obstruction HCM, and the shortest in the obstructive HCM (all P<0.05). The METs of obstructive HCM were significantly lower than the other three groups (all P<0.05).@*Conclusions@#In obstructive HCM, the left ventricular systolic strain and synchronization, as well as the MAPSE, are significantly impaired in patients both at rest and during exercise. The patients with labile-obstructive and non-obstructive HCM have reduced left ventricular GLS, twist, and e′, but normal left ventricular GCS, GRS, synchrony, and MAPSE at rest, which are all impaired during exercise.

ABSTRACT

To exploring a new minimally invasive method for the removal of moderate and severe glabellar frown lines. The corrugator supercilii muscles were subjected to blunt cutting and vacuum suction by using a self-made modified liposuction needle, and the obtained muscle particles were backfilled subcutaneously into the depression area between eyebrows to expand the wrinkles. Seventeen cases were followed up for six to twelve months after the operation. The glabellar wrinkles disappeared or became flatter in all patients. The minimally invasive corrugator resection and backfill by using self-made modified liposuction needle can effectively remove the glabellar frown lines without forming scar.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the relationship between the levels of plasma adrenaline and norepinephrine and gene polymorphism of β1 adrenergic receptor G1165C in children with enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection in hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD). Methods The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the expression of gene polymorphism of β1 adrenergic receptor G1165C in vitro. The levels of plasma adrenaline and norepinephrine were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results The plasma norepinephrine level of severe group was significantly higher than the mild group in children with EV71 infection in HFMD (P 0.05); There was no significant difference in the distribution of β1 adrenergic receptor G1165C genotype and allele between EV71 infection group and healthy control group (P > 0.05). Further analysis of EV71 infection group by dividing it into mild and severe groups showed that there was no significant difference in the distribution of genotype and allele between these two groups as well (P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine in different genotypes of EV71 infection group (P > 0.05), and in the levels of plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine in the mild and severe groups (P > 0.05). Conclusions As the disease gets worse, the plasma norepinephrine level has a rising trend in children with EV71 infection in HFMD, which is an important indicator to evaluate the progress of the disease. However, the gene polymorphism of β1 adrenergic receptor G1165C have no significant correlation, not only with the susceptibility and severity of EV71 infection in hand, foot and mouth disease, but also with the levels of catecholamine.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate sound velocity tissue quantification ( SVQ ) for the quantitative assessment of liver fibrosis stage in chronic hepatitis B ,and to evaluate the correlation between diagnostic performance of sound velocity tissue quantification and blood parameters . Methods From the May of 2013 to May of 2014 ,collect ninety‐nine patients with chronic hepatitis B who was diagnosed by clinic and / or liver biopsy as experiment group ,and thirty healthy volunteers as control group at the same time . The experiment group and control group were evaluated with to measurement the zone speed index ( ZSI) ,and blood cell count . The AST/PLT ratio index ( APRI) was calculated according the following formula , APRI=AST(ULN)/PLT(109/L) . The liver biopsy was performed in the same day with SVQ and all blood parameters .ZSI and APRI were compared by correlation with liver fibrosis stage in chronic hepatitis B . Referring to the histologic fibrosis stage on liver biopsy ,all the ZSI and the APRI value were assessed by using ROC curve analysis . The corresponding cut‐off value ,sensitivity and specificity were also calculated andcompared. Results 1)ThemeanvaluesofAPRIwere(15.9±5.7)m/sforpatientswithS0,(28.1± 2 .8)m/s for patients with S1 ,(35 .8 ± 1 .2)m/s for patients with S2 ,(42 .6 ± 0 .8)m/s for patients with S3 , and (46 .3 ± 1 .3)m/s for patients with S4 .2)Accordingly ,the areas under the ROC curve for ZSI and APRI were 0 .875 and 0 .762 for S≥S1 ,0 .832 and 0 .597 for S≥S2 ,0 .913 and 0 .675 for S≥S3 ,0 .891 and 0 .709 for S≥S4 ,respectively . Conclusions The ZSI and APRI all could be used to evaluate the stage of liver fibrosis ,but the ZSI index is superior to APRI in assessing the stage of liver fibrosis . SVQ could provide object and accurate image ,the quantitative analysis of tissue could timely and accurately evaluate the severity of liver fibrosis .

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare several noninvasive indices of fibrosis in chronic viral hepatitis B, including liver shear-wave velocity (SWV), hyaluronic acid (HA), collagen type IV (CIV), procollagen type III (PCIII), and laminin (LN). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) was performed in 157 patients with chronic viral hepatitis B and in 30 healthy volunteers to measure hepatic SWV (m/s) in a prospective study. Serum markers were acquired on the morning of the same day of the ARFI evaluation. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to evaluate and compare the accuracies of SWV and serum markers using METAVIR scoring from liver biopsy as a reference standard. RESULTS: The most accurate test for diagnosing fibrosis F ≥ 1 was SWV with the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.913, followed by LN (0.744), HA (0.701), CIV (0.690), and PCIII (0.524). The best test for diagnosing F ≥ 2 was SWV (AUC of 0.851), followed by CIV (0.671), HA (0.668), LN (0.562), and PCIII (0.550). The best test for diagnosing F ≥ 3 was SWV (0.854), followed by CIV (0.693), HA (0.675), PCIII (0.591), and LN (0.548). The best test for diagnosing F = 4 was SWV (0.965), followed by CIV (0.804), PCIII (0.752), HA (0.744), and LN (0.662). SWV combined with HA and CIV did not improve diagnostic accuracy (AUC = 0.931 for F ≥ 1, 0.863 for F ≥ 2, 0.855 for F ≥ 3, 0.960 for F = 4). CONCLUSION: The performance of SWV in diagnosing liver fibrosis is superior to that of serum markers. However, the combination of SWV, HA, and CIV does not increase the accuracy of diagnosing liver fibrosis and cirrhosis.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is a hereditary tumor disorder caused by mutations or deletions of the VHL gene. Few studies have documented the clinical phenotype and genetic basis of the occurrence of VHL disease in China. This study armed to present clinical and genetic analyses of VHL within a five-generation VHL family from Northwestern China, and summarize the VHL mutations and clinical characteristics of Chinese families with VHL according to previous studies.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>An epidemiological investigation of family members was done to collect the general information. A retrospective study of clinical VHL cases was launched to collect the relative clinical data. Genetic linkage and haplotype analysis were used to make sure the linkage of VHL to disease in this family. The VHL gene screening was performed by directly analyzing DNA sequence output. At last, we summarized the VHL gene mutation in China by the literature review.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>A five-generation North-western Chinese family afflicted with VHL disease was traced in this research. The family consisted of 38 living family members, of whom nine were affected. The individuals afflicted with VHL exhibited multi-organ tumors that included pheochromocytomas (8), central nervous system hemangioblastomas (3), pancreatic endocrine tumors (2), pancreatic cysts (3), renal cysts (4), and paragangliomas (2). A linkage analysis resulted in a high maximal LOD score of 8.26 (theta = 0.0) for the marker D3S1263, which is in the same chromosome region as VHL. Sequence analysis resulted in the identification of a functional C>T transition mutation (c. 499 C>T, p.R167W) located in exon 3 of the 167 th codon of VHL. All affected individuals shared this mutation, whereas the unaffected family members and an additional 100 unrelated healthy individuals did not. To date, 49 mutations have been associated with this disease in Chinese populations. The most frequent VHL mutations in China are p.S65 W, p.N78 S, p.R161Q and p.R167 W.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The results supported the notion that the genomic sequence that corresponds to the 167 th residue of VHL is a mutational hotspot. Further research is needed to clarify the molecular role of VHL in the development of organ-specific tumors.</p>

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of overexpression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) on the expression of epithelial cell markers (E-cadherin and alpha-catenin) and mesenchymal cell markers (N-cadherin and vimentin) in endometrial carcinoma. METHODS: The expression of all 4 markers was evaluated in EGFR overexpressing Ishikawa cells, control Ishikawa cells, and KLE cells using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blotting. The expression of these 4 markers was also determined in cancerous tissues of patients with endometrial carcinoma using immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: Ishikawa cells transfected with EGFR showed decreased expression of E-cadherin and alpha-catenin and increased expression of N-cadherin and vimentin compared with control Ishikawa cells (p<0.01 for all). The expression of N-cadherin and vimentin was higher and the expression of E-cadherin and alpha-catenin was lower in stage II-III than stage I and in grade II-III than grade I endometrial carcinoma tissue (p<0.01 for all). CONCLUSION: Decreased expression of epithelial markers (E-cadherin and alpha-catenin) and increased expression of mesenchymal markers (N-cadherin and vimentin) were observed in human endometrial carcinoma tissue. These findings correlate with high EGFR expression in cultured endometrial carcinoma cells.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the genetic characteristics of BZLF1 gene and its promoter Zp of the epidemic strains in children with primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated diseases. Total DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood of 134 children with EBV-associated infectious mononucleosis (EBV-IM) and 32 children with EBV-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH) who were admitted to Beijing Children's Hospital from 2006 to 2011. The EBNA3C, BZLF1, and Zp genes were amplified by PCR assay. Typing of EBV was performed according to the size of the amplification product of EBNA3C gene; the amplification products of BZLF1 and Zp genes were subjected to direct sequencing, and sequence analysis was performed using BioEdit 7. 0. 9. The results were as follows: (1) EBV-1 was present in 140 samples (97.2%, 140/144) and EBV-II in 4 samples (2.8%, 4/144). (2) Three BZLF1 genotypes and their 12 subtypes (including 6 newly found subtypes) were detected in this study; there were no significant differences in the frequencies of BZLF1-A and BZLF1-B between the children with EBV-IM and EBV-HLH (P = 0.083); BZLF1-A1 was the dominant genotype in children with EBV-associated diseases; t BZLF1-A mostly had three 29-bp repeats in the first intron of BZLF1 gene, and BZLF1-B mostly had 30-bp repeats (P = 0.000), with the number of repeats varying from 1 to 13. (3) Four Zp genotypes were detected in this study, including Zp-P, Zp-V3, Zp-V4, and Zp-V1; there were no significant differences in the frequencies of these Zp genotypes between children with EBV-IM and EBV-HLH (P = 0.272, 0.252, 1.0, and 1.0, respectively). (4) The linkage analysis of BZLF1 gene and its promoter Zp showed that BZLF1-A1 was highly associated with Zp-V3 (P = 0.000), while BZLF1-B4 with Zp-P (P = 0.000); EBV-I + BZLF1 A1 was highly associated with Zp-V3 (P = 0.000), while EBV-I+BZLF1-B4 with Zp-P (P = 0.000). The conclusions are as follows: (1) BZLF1-A1 is the dominant genotype in children with EBV-associated diseases; there are mostly 29-bp repeats in the first intron of BZLF1 gene for BZLF1-A genotype and 30-bp repeats for BZLF1-B genotype. (2) Zp-P and Zp-V3 are dominant Zp genotypes of EBV in children, which shared similar detection rates. (3) BZLF1-A1 is highly associated with Zp-V3, while BZLF1-B4 with Zp-P; EBV-I+BZLF1-A1 is highly associated with Zp-V3, while EBV-I+BZLF1-B4 with Zp-P.

ABSTRACT

Objectives To screen the high-risk population of stroke in China using color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI)and to establish a stroke risk prediction model in Chinese population in order to prevent and treat stroke early. Methods Forty-one base hospitals and 715 286 people in the project areas of the first 6 provinces of China conducted routine physical examinations and investigated the related risk factors for cardiocerebrovascular diseases from July 2011 to April 2012 using a cross-sectional study, among them 61 860 patients underwent carotid CDFI screening, and 49 386 of them were high-risk population (exposed to≥3 risk factors). The bilateral common carotid interma-media thickness (IMT),the number of plaques and the degree of carotid stenosis were screened and documented. And whether carotid IMT thickening or not, with or without carotid plaques, and degree of carotid artery stenotic rate 0-49% and≥50% were performed by multivariate logistic regression analysis with the risk factors for stroke, respectively. Results (1)Logistic regression analysis showed that hypertension, atrial fibrillation, smoking, and lack of physical exercise were the independent risk factors for carotid IMT thickening (hypertension:OR,1. 17;95%CI 1. 12-1. 22;atrial fibrillation:OR,1. 15;95%CI 1. 09-1. 21;smoking:OR,1. 13;95%CI 1. 08-1. 17;and lack of physical exercise:OR,1. 12;95%CI 1.08-1. 16). (2)Hypertension,atrial fibrillation, smoking, and diabetes were the independent risk factors for carotid plaque and carotid artery stenosis rate≥50%(carotid plaque,hypertension:OR,1. 55;95%CI 1. 47-1. 62;atrial fibrillation:OR,1. 13;95%CI 1.06-1. 21;smoking:OR,1. 16;95%CI 1. 11-1. 22;and diabetes:OR,1. 30;95%CI 1. 24-1. 37). Carotid stenosis rate≥50%,hypertension:OR,1. 78;95%CI 1.55-2. 03;atrial fibrillation:OR,1. 59;95%CI 1. 39-1. 81;smoking:OR,1. 33;95%CI 1. 20-1. 48;and diabetes:OR,1. 30;95%CI 1. 17-1. 45. Simple obesity did not increase the incidences of carotid atherosclerotic plaque and carotid artery stenosis ≥50%(OR,0. 78, 0.83;95%CI 0. 75-0. 82 ,0. 75-0. 92,respectively). Conclusions Neck vascular ultrasound can be used as a valuable means for screening high-risk population and detecting risk factors of stroke. It has an important clinical significance for the early diagnosis and treatment of carotid atherosclerosis disease.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the diagnostic value of the shear-wave elasticity (SWE) imaging technology on the quantitative diagnosis of chronic nephrosis stage. Methods Sixty patients with nephrosis (nephrosis group) were evaluated with SWE and the renal function test. The Young's modulus value and the renal function were measured, and the results were compared with those of twenty healthy subjects (control group). Results Twenty cases of healthy control group were definited as R0.Sixty patients of nephrosis group were divided into four groups according to renal function:R1-R4.The Young's modulus of the nephrosis group was significantly higher than the control group (P <0.01).There were also statistically significant differences among each stage of the nephrosis group (except R1 and R2 of nephrosis group)(P < 0.01).According the ROC curve, the cut-off value of the Young's modulus was 5.53 kPa when maximum area under the curve equal to 0.886,the sensitivity and specificity were 81.70% and 80.40%.The Young's modulus value and renal function were positively correlated with the stage of nephrosis. The areas under the ROC curves for the Young's modulus, urea nitrogen and csytatin C were 0.965,0.950,0.965 for ≥R3,0.978,0.912,0.961 for =R4,respectively.Conclusions SWE imaging technology provided a new quantitative index for the stage of nephrosis through quantizing the elasticity of the tissue.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the value of shear wave elastography (SWE) in diffuse thyroid disease. Methods The elastic modulus were detected by SWE in 41cases of diffuse thyroid disease [including 16 cases of Graves' disease (GD),16 cases of Hashimoto' s thyroiditis (HT) and 9 cases of subacute thyroiditis(SAT)] and 30 cases of healthy volunteers. The elastic modulus, including Emean,Emin and Emax, were measured and compared. Results Compared with the normal group[Emean(15.7-± 2.5)kPa,Emin(11.6 ± 2.4)kPa and Emax (20.2 ± 3.0)kPa],the Emean[(20.4 ± 4.7)kPa],Emin[(14.4-± 3.8)kPa] and Emax [(27.8 ± 7.3)kPa] of GD,the Emean [(18.4-± 5.0)kPa] and Emax [(25.2 ± 5.8)kPa] of HT,and the Emean[(11.0 ± 2.9)kPa] and Emin [(6.0 ± 2.7)kPa] of the SAT were different significantly(P =0.001,0.007,0.001 ; P =0.045,0.001 ; P =0.000,0.000).There were significant differences between the SAT and the other two groups, namely GD and HT (P <0.05).Such differences, however, were not found between GD and HT (P >0.05).Conclusions SWE can be used to measure the elastic modulus of the thyroid tissue quantitatively and objectively, serving as a useful technique to predict the diffuse thyroid disease.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the diagnostic value of ultrasonic elastography and fine flow imaging in differential diagnosis of cervical lymph nodes. Methods Totally 87 lymph nodes were examined with ultrasonic elastography, fine flow and conventional ultrasonography. The results were confirmed with postoperative pathology or fine-needle biopsy as well as follow-up.Using consistency check of Kappa and ROC curve to analyse the accuracy of three types of ultrasonic examination. Results Taking the results of postoperative pathology or fine-needle biopsy as well as follow-up as golden standards, the Kappa value of conventional ultrasonography was poor (Kappa =0.153,P =0.078),fine flow was moderate (Kappa =0.526,P <0.01) and ultrasonic elastography was better (Kappa =0.741,P <0.01).The area under ROC of ultrasonic elastography, fine flow and conventional ultrasonography was 0.899 (P <0.01),0.787 (P <0.01) and 0.568 (P =0.241),respectively.Conclusions Ultrasonic elastography is more valuable to differentiate malignant from benign lymph nodes.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>Mechanical stress plays an important role in the maintenance of bone homeostasis. Current hypotheses suggest that interstitial fluid flow is an important component of the system by which tissue level strains are amplified in bone. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the short-term and appropriate fluid shear stress (FSS) is expected to promote the terminal differentiation of pre-osteoblasts and detect the expression profile of microRNAs in the FSS-induced osteogenic differentiation in MC3T3-E1 cells.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>MC3T3-E1 cells were subjected to 1 hour of FSS at 12 dyn/cm(2) using a parallel plate flow system. After FSS treatment, cytoskeleton immunohistochemical staining and microRNAs (miRNAs) were detected immediately. Osteogenic gene expression and immunohistochemical staining for collagen type I were tested at the 24th hour after treatment, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay was performed at 24th, 48th, and 72 th hours after FSS treatment, and Alizarin Red Staining was checked at day 12.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>One hour of FSS at 12 dyn/cm(2) induced actin stress fiber formation and rearrangement, up-regulated osteogenic gene expression, increased ALP activity, promoted synthesis and secretion of type I collagen, enhanced nodule formation, and promoted terminal differentiation in MC3T3-E1 cells. During osteogenic differentiation, expression levels of miR-20a, -21, -19b, -34a, -34c, -140, and -200b in FSS-induced cells were significantly down-regulated.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The short-term and appropriate FSS is sufficient to promote terminal differentiation of pre-osteoblasts and a group of miRNAs may be involved in FSS-induced pre-osteoblast differentiation.</p>
